When Arnold signed the bill to stop all dredging in California he destroyed a whole industry. Dredging doesn't endanger fish to the point of extinction at all ! But the Terminator at the stroke of a pen has taken another freedom from a country that he cares nothing about. All he wants to do is make Terminator movies ! I am hoping that there will be an awakening by the gold dredgers to take back the right to be out in the wilderness and to find that yellow metal in the waterways of California again. Bring back the miners and makers of the equipment, like dredges, to bolster the economy of the State of California and other areas as well. It is only going to comeback if we all try to make our voices heard where it counts. I don't even live anywhere close to gold country, but it makes me madder than a trapped bobcat as to what Arnold did. So that is that and I will be quiet now.

John Tomlinson, CET

Fisher F75

Howdy all,

I get a lot of calls about what I feel is the absolute best metal detector for the money. Well my opinion is the Fisher F75 VLF. I have wrestled with this opinion for quite some time because the Minelab Etrac is one darn good machine too. But in the end the F75 is lighter, faster recovery, more sensitive, deeper, and easier on batteries. So there ya go for what it's worth. Dave Johnson and Mr.Gardiner have kept the Fisher F75 as king of the hill. So if any of you have been trying to figure it out and if my opinion is worth anything to ya then there it is. You know I do sell them but I don't give them away. You have probably noticed some items on my website that have risen in cost. I hope that big inflation isn't setting in but as a very small business I am forced to raise some pricing due to the rise in wholesale costs. I am hopeful with reserve that this will not continue. I am not going to swallow everything Big Brother tells us. I am tempted to follow a buddy into the goldfields to look for the yellow metal. The State of the Union doesn't seem too solid at this time. But if anything God Bless our fighting troops overseas and may they come home whole and safe. The Congress of this Nation has not the interest of the People in their thoughts and actions. Our last President left the southern border unsecured and so goes it with the present administration. Now I am supposed to be a metal detector dealer and forgive my outspoken posting, I just feel the need to say something about what is coming at us lately. Please forgive the Rant. So may God Bless you all and if you have any needs for metal detecting equipment or prospecting gear give me a ring and I am always thankful for everyones patronage. We have had some unusual temps here in the triple digit area which at least for me has shut down my metal detecting completely. I hope it will change when we get to September for the much cooler side. I want to say also that may we all be asking our God to bring back better economic times to the United States of America. I know many that are in stressful conditions with the recession. Metal detecting probably is the last thing on most people's minds. I don't want to see anyone doing without and we should help each other through this rough period. May all our fighting men and women of the military come back home safe and whole. This is something I wanted to say and I wish everyone the best, and I hope to meet some of you in the field. So stay safe and good hunting to all. I never thought I would see gold 1700.00+ an ounce ! This is the time to consider prospecting for gold especially if your out of work. It doesn't take a lot of costly equipment to go for the gold either. You can even find plans for building your own stuff if you look around the internet. You just need to research on where to go prospecting and figure out your expenses for a trip. I used to live in Tucson and went to the desert nearly every weekend. We had a homemade drywasher and it did a fair job of getting some gold. If you have a need and don't see it on my website your very welcome to call and if you get the answering machine go ahead and leave a note to me. I will call you back because I want to be of service. I have many things that are not listed on the website. I am always thankful to you all for your patronage.

I hope some of you have made good finds out there. It is never quite hunted out. The new Garrett AT Pro is showing some good use in the field. I really like the waterproof feature of it. I hope I can put it through a good workout soon. With the high gas prices and slow economy it makes it hard to venture out, but hang in there everyone and just pray for God to bring the blessings to the USA.

Ok my friends I will get on to other things and I will try to be in here more often. I will keep this short. John's Detectors is no longer an authorized dealer for Minelab. It is official today. Instead of pointing fingers I will say it was a great ride but for some reason they just stopped selling here at John's Detectors. I am glad it is over with and I will continue on with other brands that are on my website. I have a liking for the Tesoro brand and they always seem to sell. So goodbye Minelab and I hope the weather is fair in Malaysia. I will be back but I appreciate the support that everyone gives to John's Detectors. I have enjoyed the time off but will hit the salt mine again tomorrow. I have been trying out the new Garrett Ace 350. It is a decent machine money wise. The addition of the new DD coil has added to the ability of the machine very well. I buried a clad dime at about 3 inches deep amongst tiny iron fragments. Of course it is face down but I am still able to detect it if I go slow with my swing. It seemed the further I moved the coil up toward the toe the better the response to the dime. I am talking about mucho iron on top of and around the dime. So if your in a really iron saturated ground go slow and when you get even a half a belltone do a walk around and use that DD coil to your advantage. I think the new coil is the best addition to the Ace 350. So if you are wanting to get in cheap and still have a detector that can do a decent job give the Ace 350 consideration. I will try the dime on edge next and see what I get. This is just a quick test I wanted to try. Ok be safe everyone and I hope to hear from y'all soon.

John Tomlinson, CET

John's Detectors

Something New ? Christmas is here and not even any Winter or cold weather to go with it. It is almost like Spring in West Texas. I hope all are looking forward to being with family and friends as we exchange gifts together. As for the detectorist, we are all thinking about what could be under the tree ?

The new AT Pro from Garrett is a nice departure from the big bucks machines being offered by the various detector companies. One feature I really like is the waterproof electronics. I have not done any serious detecting or testing of the AT yet. Mr. Dankowski is giving us a lot of info as he goes through the paces on this machine. Sure there are a few bugs to take care of by Garrett as they are discovered during it's initiation.

I want to again wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and be safe in the field also. I just wanted to comment on the Minelab Safari a bit. I have noticed on a lot of forums that a lot of detectorists are not too sure about the machine. It uses the same FBS platform as the Etrac. With the implementation of a new microprocessor it is not the ole Quattro anymore. The recovery speed is much better now and it is an enjoyable instrument to use. I see also that the finds made using the Safari are really good ones. It is like most any detector, once you invest the time to become one with the instrument, your on your way to some good metal detecting experiences. You have the simplicity combined with the power of an excellent detector. I use mine mostly in the relic mode using ferrous audio. As for pinpointing, I use the toe or front end of the DD coil to zero in on my prey. I also like the fact that there is a good selection of coils to be had. If weight is a factor then get a harness with a D ring and bungee it up. I just wanted to share my confidence in the Safari too get the good ones and deep also. Ok adios for now and be safe in the field.

John Tomlinson, CET
John's Detectors

Garrett AT Pro

Hi everyone,
I have begun to see a lot of negative talk about the new Garrett coming to a dealer near you. It will be interesting to see once the AT gets into the field, and see the real results from the use of the machine by regulars like you and I. I just hope that the AT will be a new direction for Garrett. I have used a lot of detectors and I always find out if you don't spend enough time with the one in your hand then you maybe on an endless journey trying to get the perfect setup. This is what I try to emphasize to my customers. Be patient and use those controls the way they are meant to be used. So I will not pass judgement on the AT until Ihave used one. The new DD coil seems to be working good so far. I have been trying out the new Ace 350 and with the new coil it is an improvement in my opinion. But what I need to do is put the concentric on the 350 and compare the two coils. At any rate it is always the same, negative opinions against positive opinions. Yes Garrett is going to be releasing another new metal detector called the AT Pro which stands for all terrain. Yep it is waterproof to 10 feet. It is also a different color, black. The digital display has a 2 digit numerical readout, I think Garrett got the message. The AT comes with the new DD coil also. The operating frequency is 15 Khz which may make it a decent gold nugget hunter. So for once I am excited about seeing a new Garrett being released. It should be a cool machine. You can go to Find's Forum under the Garrett Users section to see pics posted of the AT. So I definitely want to get my hands on this model for sure and offer it to my customers. Ok be safe in the field and it will be November before we see the AT released. Actually it is called Sweetwater Trade Days and is located about 1 mile West of Sweetwater, Texas on I-20 West in a large industrial bldg. that used to be Walls clothing. You can't miss it. I am the only metal detector dealer there and I'm not hard to find. John's Detectors is in booth 5 & 6 on aile H. So come in and see the arts and crafts and be sure to come by and get that metal detector you have always wanted from John's Detectors from Blackwell, Texas. There is also an excellent bar-b-que resteraunt at the Sweetwater cutoff called Big Boys. Come by the Trade Days and I will give you detailed directions. So I won't be open at the shop this Holiday but you can call and get my wife. Ok Happy Holiday Folks and hope to see you this weekend.

John

New models

Howdy everyone,
It looks like we are at that time of year when new detector models start hitting the market. Also a change in seasons will be here soon I hope. I hate the dead of summer when those triple digits come along. I am looking forward to sales coming alive again for metal detectors. With the new Minelabs, Whites, and Garrett coming out it will be interesting to see the field reports on them. I wish Tesoro could get their water machines back in production soon too. I have only my demo Tiger Shark which is a pretty good machine. I rented it to a local law enforcement group and they used it in a small lake. They were impressed with it's sensitivity. I am hoping to get out more to detect now that it will be cooler. I hope to give the new Garrett a workout. But I am glad I have my Minelab Etrac, it is a great machine ! As you all may know these have been very hard to come by. So it is up for grabs, don't wait too long if you have been needing one of these gold machines. They are the premier gold detector in the world. The price is set to conform to Minelab policy. The first 4,498.95 gets it. Please no overseas buyers and no foreign liason's that are in the US will be able to purchase it to send back overseas. Thank you all that have been patron's of John's Detectors, it is greatly appreciated and I wish the best for all of the detectorists out there. But I didn't sell anything as for metal detecting and prospecting equipment goes. I don't know if it is a sign of the economy because they had 40,000 people to come through the gate ! I think all of the vendors were wondering what happened to spending money at the show . But I handed out lots of cards and brochures and hopefully we will get many calls for metal detectors . I must say that the high gold prices are really driving people to get out to find the yellow metal. We will soon see a new Fisher Gold Bug Pro and the Teknetics G2 metal detectors . Ok that's it for now and I wish you all good hunting and be safe while your out in the field .

John Tomlinson,CET

John's Detectors

I am Deeply Grateful

Hi everyone,

I wanted to say to all of those that have done business with me or even just asked for information on a metal detector or anything else, I am Deeply Grateful to you all ! I am able to get many other items for you if you don't mind a short wait. I am also trying to break into more prospecting equipment and would like to be a supplier for all of the prospectors out there.

As many of you may know with the worldwide gold rush prospecting gear is in short supply and the big Minelab 4500 and Teknetics T2 and the Fisher F75 are almost impossible to get now. But we still are able to get plenty of the Eureka Gold VLF gold detectors by Minelab. And don't forget the Tesoro Lobo Supertraq. Fisher also has the Golbug II and will be releasing the Goldbug 3 very soon.

I seem to be getting more orders for the new Angus MacKirk AU Trap flair sluice. This seems to be a very popular sluice already. Also remember to include a set of classifiers to get down to the finest of gold dust. I will be getting the classifier sets from Desort Fox soon. I also stock the JOBE classifiers too. I try to keep a good variety of gold pans. I think it is really interesting to see all the different designs and ideas in gold pans.

Of course my mainline is metal detectors and I try my best to use each and every model so that I can be truthful about their capabilities to all my customers. My favorite metal detector is the Minelab Etrac as far as digital units go. For analog I still like Tesoro's and try to keep them in stock. But there is a shortage on the water machines by Tesoro because of a connector that is not available anymore. They said that these models should be out in another month.

I don't think I mentioned that I am now part owner of the Sharon Kay claims in West New Mexico. I went in with 9 other fellows to purchase them. I've yet to get out to them but hope to soon. This is also known as the Rosedale District.

Ok I wish you all the best and be safe and good hunting!

John Tomlinson,CET

John's Detectors

Merry Christmas !!

Howdy everyone, I want to wish each and everyone a very Merry Christmas and I also want to thank all of my customers for their patronage to John's Detectors. The ID accuracy at depth is fantastic ! I think the new 11" DD coil added to the Etrac is a killer combo. I have great confidence in the Etrac to help find those very deep targets. I was using the Explorer SE before and without a doubt the Etrac is even better. I have a mild ground here so those in noisy ground probably will have a little different result. So definitely get an Etrac if you want to dig up really deep coins and relics ! I hope that someone will eventually come out with a third party program that is different from the stock one. There is not enough room here to write about all the advantages the Etrac will put at your fingertips. But be sure to give the Etrac some serious thought on being a part of your detecting arsenal. I must admit when I took it out of the box I wasn't too sure about the machine. But it is featherlite and about as straightforward as on can get for a digital setup. This is really a great beginner outfit and is plug and play. What little I have used it so far it seems to be pretty accurate on the depth and Discrimination. It is a single tone but it is a very nice sounding tone. The unit uses 2-9volt batteries. It has a great Pinpointing function ! I noticed that it has a seperate icon for the nickel and pulltab. My first target showed as a nickel at 2 inches and by golly that's what it was. Pulltabs are very erratic so maybe this is going to be a good nickel detector. So if I come up with any tips I will post them for everyone. This is the ole Wirechief signing out for now and everyone be safe ok. Due to a run on this model it is not available until production catches up on the order's put in for them. I will say this also, I am not as a dealer for Minelab allowed to sell to anyone that is going to reship them abroad. So keep in mind if your a liason here in the USA buying the 4500 or even other Minelab models to ship abroad I am not allowed to sell to these liason's. This is a new ruling made by Minelab and I will adhere to it as a dealer for them. Time does fly and I have enjoyed meeting all of the great people in metal detecting ! I opened the metal detector business to provide excellent service and quality products to the metal detecting masses. I do thank the many customers that have chosen John's Detectors for their detecting needs. It's not always easy to have everything in stock when customers need it most, but I thank you for your patronage everyday.

Rest assured that I will be here for another 5, 10, 15 or so years to meet the needs of those that come to John's Detectors for quality service and equipment. It is a great hobby and a learning experience to be sure ! With the down turn in our economy it has been tough but we will stay the course and may we all pray that things get better. But it seems we are getting better technology from the makers of our tools of the trade !

So everyone hang in there and it is going to be really interesting to see what the next 10 years will bring to us in metal detector technology ! Since I am a Certified Electronics Tech. I am always keeping an eye on the technology of this business. All the makers are very secretive of their technology and I understand this. There are some cool cats that really know their stuff and I hope we as the end users can rest assured of a lot more engineers coming into the metal detector designing business.

Well my friends I wish you all good finds and be safe while making those finds. We want to hear from you and not about you ! Ok I will be back soon with another posting and remember if John's Detectors can be of service be sure to call me, I'll be glad to have ya ! Detector electronics is very interesting to me although I know little about them. I tend to try to compare them to radio electronics. But to get the ball rolling one must have a way to intercept the desired signal and get it amped to a usable level. But there is something that stands in the way of obtaining a great signal and that is noise. And some of this noise comes from inside the very instrument you are using and it is called thermal noise created by electron activity inside the components, namely resistors. This noise can be lowered by a cooling process that is expensive and impractical. So I suppose we have to live with it. So we have a signal/noise ratio to work with.

So in the first amp of a metal detector receiver it is best to find a device with the lowest noise figure and highest gain to help mask the high noise figure, am I on the right track? An EE may want to step in here to correct me. But if you try to amp it up too much you might have spurious noise also. but overall it is not good to use excessive gain and cause more problems.

I am hoping someone will step in here to tell me that my thought process is way off on Mars! I am always willing to learn and I suppose I just wanted to ramble a bit. Ok evryone is welcome to come by John's Detectors to get help for your needs and if I don't have it, most likely I can get it. Good hunting and be safe everyone!

John Tomlinson,CET

John's Detectors

Blackwell,Tx.

Maverick Gold Pan

Ok here is the Maverick gold pan for working your fine concentrates. So good hunting or good prospecting or meteorite hunting and remember to always be safe.

John Tomlinson,CET

John's Detectors

Minelab Etrac and Gold Coins

In case anyone is curious I air tested a $10 gold coin and a $5 gold coin on the Minelab Etrac. The $10 gold coin read F 12- C 38. The $5 gold coin read F 12- C 30. Interesting, eh? This is using the 11" Pro coil. I really like the Etrac because it hits solid on the targets your looking for, coins, jewelry, relics and so on. I am a small coil guy but I have found the 11" Pro coil to be quite useful. I use it most of the time even on the Safari. The menu is very easy to navigate through also. It is my favorite detector. I recommend it even to a beginner because it is also a turn on and go machine. Ok fellow detectorists remember to keep your digger sharp and your coil cover clean because it's out there, go find it!

John Tomlinson,CET

John's Detectors

Setting Up The Sovereign GT

There seems to be some that have a little trouble setting the Minelab Sovereign GT for the Discrimination mode. I thought I would share how I set the controls on my Sov. GT. To begin turn on the machine and increase the volume full clockwise, then set Sensitivity to the Auto mode. Then set Threshold to an audible and stable level, be sure not to set it too high. Continue on to the Disc knob and set it full counterclockwise=off. Set the Notch also to full counterclockwise=off. Set the Threshold toggle switch to Threshold. For my area setting the Noise Cancel toggle switch to Band 2 works best. Next we need to Ground Balance the GT and set the All Metal toggle to All Metal Then set the Tracking toggle switch to Track. The machine is now set up for Ground Balancing. Find ground that is free of any metal targets first, this is a must. Listen to the Threshold tone and begin pumping the search coil up and down above the clear spot of ground. Usually just a few pumps and the Threshold levels out with no change in pitch of the tone. Once you have acheived this hold the coil still and switch the tracking toggle to fixed. Then switch your All Metal toggle to Disc. Setting it to Iron Mask is your choice. You are now ready to go detecting. If you have the DigiSearch digital readout module then put a quarter on the ground and sweep it making sure you are getting a good tone. Calibrate the readout to 180 for a quarter. Listening to the changes in pitch of the tone is very important. High conductors will give you a nice high pitch and low conductors will be a low pitch. The Sovereign GT takes some getting use to but with regular practice it will start to click. The DigiSearch readout helps if you have that too. Another very important point is to have a slower than normal coil swing. It isn't fast but the slow swing pays off because this is a good machine. It is a misunderstood machine but can get deep and find the good stuff. Again practice makes perfect. It will also do well at the beach if you are near one. The GT can be a bit heavy and so I would recommend a Swingy Thingy cord to help support it better. I hope this is helpful and gets some more finds for everyone. Oh one more thing I should say is that the GT doesn't track the ground in the Discrimination mode and so you might want to repeat the GB'ing if you move to another area. Good hunting and be safe all!

John Tomlinson,CET

John's Detectors

Meteorite Detecting

Another great aspect of metal detecting is hunting for meteorites. Meteorites can be very valuable. Again research is your friend in finding where recorded meteorite falls are located and also the strewn fields caused by them. Meteorites are made of nickel-iron, nickel-iron and stone, or just stone. Of course your metal detector will sense the ferrous meteorites but not stone types. Another simple but good tool is a quality magnet, if the meteorite is ferrous then the magnet will stick to it. Also knowing what they look like helps a great deal. I would recommend Robert Haag's book on meteorites because it has a wealth of pictures to help compare your possible meteorite find to. I recommend a website called www.skyrockcafe.com for getting help from fellow hunters. This is an excellent website to learn about meteorites, so be sure to check it out. So spacerocks are out there, do you have what it takes to find them? If not call me and I will help you out. Ok good hunting and as always be safe out there.

John Tomlinson,CET
John's Detectors

Research

You know the best thing anyone that metal detects can do is research. You want to find out where the good finds are being made. It might be in the oldest section of your town. If you have access to ghost towns they are a great place to try out. Maybe out at the local swimming hole or where there was a lot of people activity. Of course the Internet is a great place for getting the info you need about certain locations. Your local library and court house are always available too. It can be very frustrating if you just start detecting and dig just junk. Books on old treasure tales can be fun to read and who knows you might find the one treasure that everyone else has been looking for. But just stay with it and never give up! Tenacity and patience are great to have for this hobby. I really like to read W.C. Jameson's books on long lost treasures and I carry these and other books here at John's Detectors. So that means I need some kind of protection against these critters. I have been told that the average cost of a rattlesnake bite is 17,000.00 when all said and done if you survive! But there is protection available in the form of Snake Guardz lower leg armor. They are guaranteed against penetration and I wear them anytime I'm out roaming the badlands here in West Texas in search of relics and coins with my metal detector. They are comfortable and will help keep the cactus out of your shins too. I just wanted to make a note here that they are the best and are very cheap compared to an actual snakebite. Put the detector in the All-Metal mode and hold the searchcoil about 4 to 6" above this spot. begin pumping the coil up and down continuously but don't let the coil touch the ground. If the detector threshold audio increases when going toward the ground then adjust the GB control knob more toward the + side. If the detector threshold audio increases when coming up from the ground then adjust the GB control more toward the - side. What you need to accomplish is no change in the threshold audio going up or down. With practice you will be a pro in no time at all. Give it a try and practice this on a regular basis. It is a very important setting but don't be afraid of it. Not all detectors come with this user adjustable feature. These machines are said to be set by the factory in a fixed Ground Balance mode. The problem encountered when exposing the ground to a magnetic field from your search coil is that some soils have what is called mineralization and these minerals get energized by the field to the point they will cause a response from your detector. We call this falsing which of course is undesireable. We only want to hear and see a response from the desired objects we are seeking. Some machines come with a manually adjustable GB. What we want to do is adjust our machine to not be responsive to these minerals and to only hear or see a response from the good targets in the ground. We want to eliminate the ground noise as completely as possible. This will make your detecting experience much more enjoyable and you won't waste a lot of time digging nothing. Some of the new metal detectors are equipped with an Auto Ground Balance feature which is really nice. Ok I felt I needed to mention this subject and I will post again on what the procedure is to eliminate the ground responses on your metal detector. Thanks for reading this and good hunting everyone! Be safe and wear gloves when digging also.

John Tomlinson,CET
John's Detectors

Finds

Here are some items from a 107 year old house that I worked with my metal detector. Most even high end units are turn on and go. They are very light and economical on batteries. With persistance by going to locations that have lots of people congregating there you can find lost change, jewelry and if the area has been in use for many many years you will find old coins too. Research really pays off in a big way also. Metal detectors are priced anywhere from about 150.00 to 4500.00 depending on the type of detecting you will want to do. For the newbee the 200.00 to 300.00 range would be a good start. There is always an experienced detectorist around willing to help the newbee with tips for the trade. So you can have fun and even end up with some profit too. It is not so unusual to be able to pay for your detector with the finds you dig up. I hope this will be some helpful info for those that are not sure about taking the plunge into a great hobby! Ok good luck and be sure to let us know if you got a new machine.

John Tomlinson,CET
John's Detectors

Hi everyone, my name is John and welcome to the John's Detectors Blog on metal detectors.
